Townscape and history

Townscape and history

Düren was already a royal palace in the early Middle Ages, used by Pepin and later by Charlemagne. In the air raid of 16 November 1944 only 13 of 6,431 houses remained undamaged, which is why the centre looks largely modern today. Remains of the city wall, for example on Wallstraße, recall the medieval town.
