The Obermaubach reservoir was built in 1933/34. It balances the fluctuating flow of the Rur caused by the hydropower plants upstream. Today it is above all a place for walks, anglers and nature lovers. One highlight is the fish ladder at the dam, considered one of the highest in North Rhine-Westphalia.
A circular path around the lake crosses bridges and shoreline trails. Cyclists find the Rurufer-Radweg, the Wasserburgenroute and the Kaiser-Route here. Trails start nearby to Nideggen, along the Rur towards Heimbach and into the Eifel National Park.
In the village stand the parish church of St. Apollinaris from 1778 and the forest chapel that villagers built in 1994–1996. At the village entrance lies the castle mound of Burg Obermaubach, also known as Burg Molbach; the County of Molbach is first mentioned in a document of 1152.
Obermaubach has a station on the Rurtalbahn, which runs hourly to Düren and Heimbach. This takes you easily to the national park gates, to Heimbach or towards Cologne and Aachen.
